New York’s stable White Owl is mixing things up once again, with a new triple threat release of the finest analogue persuasion. Three Incantations is the newest EP from the label bosses Conor Krane and Piner who come together as a duo named Drim for a sonic and rhythmic masterclass. Detailed sound sculptures and clear dance floor etiquette reign supreme here.
“Nectar,” is a bouncing juggernaut of metallic flashes, chunky percussion and chirping notes that create a jacking, up-tempo energy that feels both timeless and fresh. The track’s carries an undercurrent of nostalgia, evoking memories of dance floors past while hinting at the promise of new experiences. It’s a reminder that in music, as in life, the familiar can be reinvented in surprising ways.
“Circadia” adopts a more reflective stance. The twitching lead synth, which floats through the song like a straying idea, is anchored by the booming kick and vibrating sub-bass. The mesmerising aspects of the track lure you in as it builds, creating a realm where time appears to bend and stretch. It’s an opportunity to go inward, get lost in the music, and maybe discover something unexpected along the way.
“Smelt,” the EP’s last track, concludes with a spirit of light-hearted discovery. Its odd rhythms and groovy beat are blended with a raw yet refined tribal energy. The whirling synths give the soundscape more depth and make it both thought-provoking and contagious.
Three Incantations is a wild ride of creativity and honest music making from a cultural hotspot in Brooklyn, and the three original works keep giving, where each listen reveals something new to the psyche than the last.
