DT:Feature | The Advent

Not many artists endure long careers, stay relevant and remain at the forefront of a genre. The Advent covers all these areas and keeps giving back time and time again to the music he so adores.

His flawless label Kombination Research has been releasing since 1998 and has just put together a mammoth 100th edition called KR100 Collection that features tracks from the extensive back catalogue. Although the label moved to digital format in 2005, these tracks from the label’s inception to that point, have never been made available digitally before. A great education to see a cross section of the history books for such an outstanding project.

We had the opportunity to see what inspires the main man…

> 01. Which artists and genres inspired you to start producing music?
Mantronix, Man Parish, Arthur Baker, Kraftwerk, Jeff Mills, Drexciya, Larry Heard, Adonis…

> 02. What production hardware or software do you get the best results from and what does it bring to your work?
Roland TR909. I have been using it for nearly 20+ years now and it always surprises me, you put it through and effect or other plug in device and something new can happen.

> 03. Which tracks from your own back catalogue are a staple in your DJ/Live sets?
From my older archive…

In Search” from my Motor EP [Kombination Research] (1999) from the Motor EP, inspired from my first visit to Motor Club in Detroit.

From my more recent works in the last 10 years, this pretty much finishes the night or set perfectly.
Green Velvet - “Flash” (The Advent & Industrialyzer Remix) [Relief] (2010)

> 04. What aspect do you enjoy the most from working in music?
Discovering new concepts and creating something unique.

> 05. What would you change or improve about the music industry and/or club culture?
I would like to see more proper underground music represented instead of this new more Tech House driven genre, stop following the bigger trend. People forgot about the essence and raw energy of what real Techno is.

> 06. What’s your passion outside of making music?
My family and kids.

> 07. Where has been one of your most enjoyable gigs to date and what made it so special?
Liquid Rooms - Tokyo. It was our first time in Japan and this venue. We knew about Jeff’s Liquid Room Mix CD and they did not let us down :-)… the crowd, sound, production were so professional, never seen this level or experienced anything close to it.

> 08. Which track by another artist has really caught your attention recently?
Anything by Gary Beck. Completely Techno all the way…

Gary Beck - “Ars Poetica” [Bek Audio] (2012)

> 09. Which artists do you keep a close eye on and rate highly for the future?

Jason Fernandes and Paranoid London.

> 10. What forthcoming projects or releases are we yet to see?

Apart from the KR100 Collection, a shit load more… keep listening… Peace…
